At the table

I love dishes that are either cooked or prepared at the table. If it involves lighting a fire dangerously close to your face, even better! :D

Meals we've had at home (or the home of a friend) that involved at-the-table cooking/prep:
  • Korean bbq
  • Sushi
  • Onigiri
  • Vietnamese spring rolls (fresh, not fried)
  • shabu-shabu
I can't think what else.

I'm thinking fondue is next. I've had a set forever that I've never used.

I've come to really not like cooking in front of me. Assembly, like sushi, no problem.

Where they cook it for me, I hate the fact I get covered in greasy splatter by the end and smell awful. It's particularly bad at Korean BBQ joints.

In the case where I have to cook it, there's the aforementioned smell problem, and then there's the prbolem that you get no discount for doing the work yourself. If I wanted to cook, I'd do it at home. Not walk to the restaurant, sit down and then cook my own food for more money than the raw materials cost.

But for stuff like sushi, I do enjoy watching the process. I also enjoy watching the process when a restaurant has an open kitchen.

Just to be clear, I meant at-table stuff at home, rather than a restaurant.

:D

I specifically go out to Korean BBQ when I feel like cooking at the table, but go to a non-BBQ Korean restaurant (like a "jung-sik" one) if I don't. :) And many times, I do feel like it. Where is the fun?

Also, in almost every Korean BBQ restaurant, you can ask them to cook the meat in the back. Doesn't help w/ the smell on clothing since everyone else is cooking at the table though. :)

I ask them to cook it in the back all the time now.

As for the odor, yeah, it's still a problem, but not quite as bad. And if you're table is a little isolated, all the better.

Recently, I just had the thought, "waitaminit! Why don't I let them do the work? It's the same price!" Another thought that shouldn't have been so slow in coming.

We do go to a Japanese place where we cook our food. But there, it's cheaper than other places where the kitchen does the cooking, so I don't mind it as much.

I forgot about fondue. I don't mind fondue, but that's not really cooking to me. It's basically a hot dip. Sure, it's work to make the dip, but it's work to make good guacamole or salsa.

How is fondue not cooking? Raw meat + oil = cooking. Unless you're just talking about appetizers (cheese) and deserts (chocolate), which you're right, is not cooking at all.

I like having food cooked in front of me at Japanese steak houses, because then I can set the jug of sake on the grill to keep it warm :D

I love Fondue at home. It's so much better than at a restaurant, you just have to be careful it doesn't become lumpy.
